Alfonso Bialetti was an engineer who became famous for acquiring Luigi De Ponti's invention of the simple yet elegantly designed Moka Express coffeemaker. Designed in 1933, the coffee pot has been a style icon since the 1950s. He was born in 1888 in Omegna, Italy and died on 31 December 1970.

    Additional Information

    Preferred Preperation

    stainless pots

    before first use

    1. Remove all labels and packaging.
    2. Hand wash all parts with soapy water.
    3. Rinse all parts thoroughly to remove any soap residue.

    to use

    1. Fill the lower chamber with cold water just below the valve.
    2. Insert the funnel and fill it with ground espresso (do not tamp). Remove any coffee grounds on the edge of the funnel
    3. Tightly screw the upper part of the pot on to the base. Avoid using the handle for leverage.
    4. Select burner size to fit bottom of pot. For gas stovetop, make sure the flame is not larger than bottom of pot. The flame should not come around the sides of the pot.
    5. Place pot on the stovetop until the water boils and coffee begins to come out of the center post. There will be a gurgling sound during this process.
    6. When the top of the pot is full of coffee, remove from stove. Hazel brown foam appears just seconds before the coffee is completely done.
    7. Before pouring coffee, stir it in the upper chamber with a small spoon to equalize all the different coffee layers for optimum flavor.

    • Wash by hand with warm water.
    • Dry thoroughly with towel.
    • Do not reassemble the product until all parts are completely dry to avoid oxidation.
    • Do not use soap or detergent.
    • Do not use in dishwasher.
    • Do not use steel wool or other abrasive products.

    • Use coffee ground specifically for a moka coffee maker. Don't use too fine ground coffee.
    • Periodically check the funnel, the filter plate and the washer for wear. Over time, they may need to be replaced.
    • Never use the pot without water.
    • Never use other contents besides coffee like teas, cacao powder or instant coffee as it will clog the filter plate.
    • If the heat is too high, coffee may have a burnt taste. Getting the optimum temperature for brewing may take some trial and error.
    • Store coffee grounds in airtight container, away from sunlight.
    • Use filtered water for best coffee flavor.

How to make an espresso  Using the Bialetti Espresso Maker

    How to make an espresso

    • Fill the base with water to just below the level of the safety valve. Be careful not to overfill as the air in the space between the water and the coffee filter is what heats and forces the water up through the coffee. If the water tank is overfilled the result is boiled coffee, with a bitter or burnt taste.
    • Insert the funnel.
    • Loosely fill the funnel with espresso ground coffee, do not press coffee down.
    • Screw the top section firmly to the base.
    • Place the coffeemaker on a low to medium heat.
    • When using on gas adjust the flame so that it does not extend up the side of the pot.
    • It takes only 3 – 6 minutes, depending on the size of the coffeemaker and the intensity of heat, until it’s ready to serve.
    • All Bialetti stovetop espresso makers are suitable for use on gas, electric and ceramic hobs.  Venus is also suitable for induction.

Using the Bialetti Mukka Express Cappuccino Maker

    How to make a cappuccino

    • It is really important that you use the correct measurements at all times. When making cappuccino always use the plastic measuring cup that comes with the Mukka. 150ml is ideal for the water tank, which is the lower half of the Mukka.
    • Place the funnel in the water tank and loosely fill with espresso ground coffee.
    • Screw the upper part tightly to the tank.
    • Open the lid and add the milk – up to the level indicated in the tank. 190ml is ideal for the milk tank, which is the upper half of the Mukka.
    • Any milk may be used (however “blue top” milk gives the richest froth).
    • Milk should preferably be at room temperature, however may be used straight from the refrigerator.
    • Close the lid and push the pressure button to activate.
    • Place the cappuccino maker on a medium to medium high heat.
    • When using on gas, adjust the flame so that it does not extend up the side of the pot.
    • It takes only 3 – 6 minutes, depending on the intensity of heat, for the cappuccino to froth.
    • To reach the right temperature for the cappuccino it is recommended to leave the Mukka on the hot plate for approx. 1 minute after the cappuccino valve has popped up.
    •  The Mukka is suitable for use on gas, electric and ceramic hobs.  It is not suitable for induction.

The Mukka Express may also be used to prepare a simple milky coffee

    • Follow the above instructions for preparing cappuccino but fill the water tank up to the valve, approximately 400ml. This is important.
    • Continue following the instructions as for preparing cappuccino. However, before placing on the heat ensure that the black cappuccino valve is in the upright position rather than pressed down.
    • Continue as per the instructions for preparing cappuccino.
